Last Sunday, a group of thirty people in sleepy Franklin, Massachusetts joined forces just steps from the first public library in America to wave Ukrainian flags and show their support for democracy.
These tiny standouts may seem inconsequential, but actually it’s quite the reverse. Nine out of ten drivers cruising down Main Street honked their support and gave exuberant thumbs up. Participants made new like-minded friends and networked about other rallies. Members of different churches chatted about their social justice work. And above all, the small group showed that we are not taking things lying down.
Most of the pro-democracy rallies and protests are taking place in urban centers. But not all. And people who live in the suburbs or rural areas also need evidence that they are not alone in worrying that we are losing our country while betraying our allies. The more of these standouts, the better.
And after shouting and waving for an hour, we all felt better, too—and lifted others’ flagging spirits.
Our next standout for Ukrainian and American democracy takes place Saturday, March 22nd, at noon. How many other small groups can do the same? DM me for more details if you need them, or just go for it! And then, send me pictures and stories. I’d love to write about you.
